Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. **All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be very low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)**

Wikimedia sites to move to primary data center in Ashburn, Virginia. Read-only mode expected.

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) Next week, the Wikimedia Foundation will transition its main technical operations to a new data center in Ashburn, Virginia, USA. This is intended to improve the technical performance and reliability of all Wikimedia sites, including this wiki. There will be some times when the site will be in read-only mode, and there may be full outages; the current target windows for the migration are January 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2013, from 17:00 to 01:00 UTC (see other timezones on timeanddate.com). More information is available in the full announcement.

If you would like to stay informed of future technical upgrades, consider becoming a Tech ambassador and joining the ambassadors mailing list. You will be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

In order to improve the chance of getting a qualified input, I would like to encourage anyone with some form of knowledge on Faroese authors right/copyright legislation to comment on commons:Template talk:PD-Denmark50#Does_the_template_cover_Faroe_Islands_.2F_Greenland.3F. The issue at hand is wither Danish authors right legislation (lov om ophavsret) - and thus the mentioned copyright tag - also cover photographs from the Faroe Islands. Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Ombudsman Commission og privacy policy

Mandag den 4. marts mødes Ombudsman commission| (OC) i San Francisco for at deltage i en række møder med Wikimedia Foundation om OC’s arbejde. Et af emnerne er, hvad vi – dvs. Commission og Foundation - mener, at OC’s indsatsområde er eller bør være. OC tager sig i øjeblikket kun af overtrædelser af den gældende privacy policy, så f.eks. muligt misbrug af checkuserværktøjet, som ikke medfører overtrædelse af reglerne i privacy policy, kun kan behandles ved lokale wikiprocesser (en:wiki har ArbCom og AUSC til den slags).

OC indbyder alle til at give kommentarer til, hvad de mener OC’s arbejdsområde bør omfatte fremover. Som medlem af OC modtager jeg gerne sådanne kommentarer til fremlæggelse under møderne, så de kan blive diskuteret, overvejet og givet passende vægt. Bemærk, at jeg afrejser søndag, så for at have tid til at læse kommentarerne, er en hurtig reaktion nødvendig!

Et par spørgsmål til overvejelse følger nedenfor, men det er ikke et krav, at de besvares hverken direkte eller indirekte, hvis du mener, at du har en betydende kommentar uden at gøre det.

Spørgsmål: 1) Vil du støtte,at Ombudsman Commission påtager sig at undersøge misbrug af checkuser- og oversightværktøjerne? As I annonced 2 weeks ago, Wikidata phase 1 (language links) has been deployed here today. Language links in the sidebar are coming from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

We have one active Bureaucrat (Niceley) and one (two if you count the bureaucrat as an admin also) activ administrators (myself and Niceley). The rest is inactive, we have one inactiv bureaucrat and 6 inactive administrators here on the Faroese Wikipedia. Quackor has not been active for almost three years, he is one of two beaurocrats, Arne List who started the Faroese Wikipedia, has not been active here for 4 years now, Twincinema has not been active here for 6 years now, Girdi has not been active here for 5 or 6 years now, Jogvanj has not been active here for 7 years now, Rthomsen has not been active here for 5 years now. As far as I know we don't have any policy regarding how long admins should still hold their adminstrator rights or for how long a period with inactivity before they lose their administrative rights. I can't see why users should still be administrators, when they have not been active for 3 to 7 years and don't use their administative rights at all. I have to protest against this description. Quackor has declared that he has very little time for editing. When it comes to bureocrat actions, on the other hand, he has not been that passive; forinstance, he made you an administrator... His few later edits on fo-wp indeed concern questions about bureocrat measures and not article contents.

I agree with Eileen that there's no reason to have inactive users with administrator rights. The policy on most Wikipedias is that you'll lose your administrator rights after one year of inactivity. I think we should contact Arne List, Twincinema, Girdi, Jogvanj and Rthomsen and ask if they're interested in keeping their rights. Even though Quackor hasn't been that active, I agree with Jörgen B that it's benefital to have two bureaucrats, even though it would be preferable to have active bureaucrats. --iceley 23. mai 2013 kl. 01:47 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say that Quackor should not be a bureaucrat any more, I just mentioned how long time ago it has been since almost all administrators have been active here, hoping for some kind of response and discussion on this matter. I do agree with you Jørgen, it is not a good idea to have only one bureocrat. Yes, I know that Quackor made me an administrator 1 and a half year ago, but there has been very little action since then, and you are right, that he has performed bureocrat actions, when he has been active. I also agree with Niceley that there is no reason to have a number of inactive users with administrator rights. One year might be a bit too short time for a little Wikipedia as this one, but a maximum of two years without performing any administrative actions or any other action I would say is enough to remove those rights from a user and of course ask them first if they have any comment or if they wish to become active again. I used this list (20 recently absent wikipedians, ordered by number of contributions) along with looking at the user contributions when I mentioned the period of inactivity of most of the administrators. Yes, you are right Jørgen, the list includes only article edits, and not the more important bureocrat actions or administrator actions. Quackor has made one beaurocrat action within the last year, it was on 28 December 2012. His second last action was to make me an administrator on 16 October 2011. There is a risk in concentrating on article edits when you consider activity. If you had checked Quackor's ordinary contributions (by means of the brúkaraíkast option), you would have found out that he was active in december as a bureocrat from this, also without checking the measures he finally decided to take.
I think that the truth is that there presently are rather sparce reasons for bureocrat actions in the fowp. (Niceley, how often have you found reason to act as a bureocrat, since you became one?) This of course is a bit of a pity; but there it is.
Niceley, different wikipedias have different rules. I think that nowp didn't introduce the one year time limit until a couple of years ago. When fowp has achieved the number of active users that nowp had then, of course such rules could be sensible.
On the other hand, politely asking people who have been absent from all activity here for two yearswhether they wish to retain their rights could not be wrong. Seemingly, none of the overwhelmin amount of people who have discussed this (i. e., us three) would agree to at least this modest proposal; but of course we might want to ask e. g. Quackor for his opinion (since he has had most experience with this, and is one of the principals behind the present rules; see Wikipedia:Áheitan um umboðsstjórastøðu and Wikipedia:Undirhúsið/Savn 7#Umboðsmaður; by the way, were those lists ever copied to some weasonably visible position?).
Eileen, since you already started this check, could you please continue, by checking the dates of the last activity of any kind for these administrators?

Om mitt spörsmål till Niceley: Jag undrade icke om han var "aktiv nog" eller för hur länge sedan han brukat verktygen. Vad jag undrade, Nicolai, var hur ofta du har haft orsak att göra något som embetsmaður, något du icke kunde göra som vanlig användare eller som umboðsstjóri. Orsaken var icke att ifrågasätta ditt embetsmannaskap, utan att undersöka hur rätt jag har i min uppfattning att denna wikipedia bara sällan har behövt byråkratåtgärder.
Om att spörja de inaktiva: Någon orsak att nu spörja Quackor finner jag icke. Ni två verkar att föredra ett års tidsgräns för vilka man frågar; jag föredrar två år; men i detta fall blir utfallet detsamma. Quackor var senast aktiv för mindre än ett halvt år sedan, de övriga för mer än två år sedan.
Vi har alla tre föreslagit att de inaktiva (icke Quackor) spörjes om de vill fortsätta som umboðsstjórar, och ingen annan har föreslagit något annat; så det verkar vettigt att göra. Jag skulle dock vilja att vi försöker nå dem på flera sätt än genom att bara lägga in meddelanden på deras brúkarakjak. Vi kan till exempel pröva att skicka wikimail till dem. Jag föreslår att vi ber dem att svara, både om de vill ha kvar verktygen och om de icke vill, och att vi denna gång låter dem som vill behålla verktygen göra det. (Kanske de på det sättet får en knuff (a push) till att aktivera sig litet?)
En orsak till att vara litet försiktiga är att vi nu diskuterar en regeländring. Vi bör vara extra uppmärksamma på att informera alla som blivit utsedda enligt de gamla reglerna om detta. Mitt förslag är att vi sätter en gräns på två år för någon aktivitet alls, men efter att vi har sport de som blivit utsedda efter de gamla reglerna också sätter meddelanden på brúkarakjakið för dem som varit inaktiva mer än 18 månader. De har då ett halvår på sig att åtminstone svara att de vill fortsätta som umboðsstjórar; vilket ju också är en aktivitet.

Jeg har heller aldri nevnt at 1 år inaktivitet bør være noen form for grense; eneste jeg gjorde var å referere til hvordan det fungerer på de fleste andre Wikipediaer. Jeg har heller ikke nevnt at Quackor bør fratas hverken administrator-rettigheter eller noen andre form for rettigheter. Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) is here

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. We have now enabled the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) a month ago and two days ago on the English Wikipedia. Today all the remaining Wikipedias followed.

What does having phase 2 enabled here mean? You are now able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!) The current state is just the beginning though. It will be extended based on feedback we get from you now.

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p159}} in the wiki text of the article on Wikimedia Foundation. This will return “San Francisco” as that is the headquarter location of the non-profit.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:headquarter location}} instead of {{#property:p159}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can test it on test2 if you don't want to do it in an article here.

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. There is a manual for doing that and a blog post explaining about this change in non-technical language. Right now your Wikipedia does not have any local documents on VisualEditor, and we hope that your community can change that. I have translated the FAQ into Faroese and a part of the Portal and a small part of the user guide. I will try to do more as soon as possible. Does anyone here, who has good knowledge to the Faroese language, know which words would be best to use for the "Edit source" botton in VisualEditor? The Wikimedia Foundation's editor engagement team developed this tool (code-named 'Echo') earlier this year, to help users contribute more productively to MediaWiki projects.

We're now getting ready to bring Notifications to almost all other Wikimedia sites, and are aiming for a 22 October deployment, as outlined in this release plan. It is important that notifications is translated for all of the languages we serve.

Introducting Beta Features

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. It will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki this Thursday, 7 November. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

We hope that this software will be useful to people in your community, and we can really use your help to make it better! Please let us know if you find any problems.
